Staying Safe While Voting: Essential Election Safety Tips

This article provides some tips on how to stay safe during the Nigerian 2023 General Election, which is just around the corner

Elections are a crucial aspect of democracy and are designed to ensure that citizens can exercise their right to vote and choose their leaders. However, election periods are often associated with violence, political assassinations, and other forms of unrest. It is therefore essential for citizens to take measures to ensure their safety while exercising their democratic rights.

Here are some safety tips to observe during the Nigerian 2023 General Election;

1.Monitor news and happenings:

Ensure that you are updated about the latest developments in their local area, including any security concerns or incidents that could impact your safety. This you can do by following reputable news organizations. You can also set up Google Alerts and follow relevant social media accounts.

2.Dress in comfortable clothes:

You may be standing in line for a while, and the weather in Nigeria can be hot and humid. Wearing comfortable clothing and shoes will help ensure that you are able to wait in line and cast your vote without feeling uncomfortable or exhausted. It is also important to note that you should avoid wearing clothing that is too flashy or attention-grabbing. This can make you a target for political thugs or criminals who may be looking to intimidate or harm voters. Instead, try to dress in neutral colors and avoid clothing with political slogans or branding. This will help you blend in and avoid drawing unwanted attention to yourself.

3.Avoid loitering around the polling booths :

Loitering around can make you vulnerable to acts of violence, especially in areas where election-related violence has been known to occur in the past. Secondly, it can create congestion around the polling stations, which can make it difficult for voters who are still waiting to cast their ballots. It could also create a sense of unease among other voters or even the election officials which could disrupt proceedings.

4. Plan your route:

If you are eligible to vote, plan your route ahead of time and avoid areas with a history of violence or unrest. Stick to well-lit, public areas and avoid shortcuts.

5. Travel in groups:

Whenever possible, travel with a group of people you trust. There is safety in numbers, and a group is less likely to be targeted by criminals.

6. Avoid political arguments:

Political differences can sometimes lead to heated arguments and confrontations. If you find yourself in a situation where tensions are high, it's best to remove yourself from the situation and avoid escalating it further.

By following these tips, citizens can exercise their right to vote and participate in the democratic process without putting their lives in danger.
