Fast facts on Vitiligo

June 25th is World Vitiligo Day and first, we will like to give a shout out to Olori Supergal who has been creating quite an awareness on the celebration. As part of the celebration, we will like to give you some facts that you should know and to encourage us to stop the discrimination against people who have this skin condition.

One basic fact that you must know is that these people did not bleach their skin neither did they get acid poured on them. They are not suffering from a burn neither are they reacting to some lotion. Rather, Vitiligo is a skin condition that has to do with the discolouration of the skin as a result of the  destruction in the skin cells called Melanocytes which makes skin pigment.

Vitiligo is peculiar to all but more noticeable with dark skinned people. It tends to appear on the part of the skin which is exposed to the sun. While a child whose parents have Vitiligo is likely to have Vitiligo but then it doesn’t follow for most people.
