How To Maintain A Work-Life Balance

As women, maintaining a work-life balance can be overwhelming. It may seem as though we can’t have a thriving career and a happy family life but, it is possible.

With over 15 years of marriage, two children, and my multiple roles as a pharmacist,  gospel recording Artist,  a public speaker and a life Coach, I have had my share of struggles of work-life balance. However, they say that resilience is one of the greatest strengths of a woman.

Thanks to the following tips, I have been able to maintain a work-life balance.

1. ORDER YOUR PRIORITIES

Prioritizing your time is a powerful way to maintain a work-life balance. You need to think consciously about how to spend your time by deciding which tasks matter most to you and your organization. In doing that, you will be also decide which to drop and which task is better off outsourced. To do this effectively, ask yourself these questions;

  • What is totally non-negotiable?
  • What are the most important commitments at work and family?

2. KEEP COMMUNICATION LINES OPEN

Be completely honest and transparent at work and seek assistance when necessary in extremely challenging situations. For instance, you could ask your superiors for flexible work hours if you are responsible for dropping the kids off at school. Where this is not possible, seek out better alternatives  that doesn’t affect your performance at work and also doesn’t leave the children hanging.

3. PRACTICE THE ART OF DELEGATIONdelegate

Closely related to the above is acknowledging that you cannot do everything on your own. Decide what you must do yourself and what others can take care of. Seek help from coworkers, spouse, and family members.

4. STAY IN TOUCH WITH WHAT MATTERS

Being aware with the welfare of your children especially when they are not at school is important and can be achieved by putting a phone call or video call through at your break time or during lunch time. This comforts the child that you are near and also helps you get through a rough day at work.

5. LIMIT DISTRACTIONS AND EXIT TIME-WASTERS

When you are a working woman, every minute is crucial — at work and home. If you want to be focused and productive, it’s essential to limit unnecessary talk and gossip with co-workers,  limit casual phone use and browsing of the internet. Ensure to set specific time limits to address very important issues at work. At home, avoid watching too much of TV except it strengthens your bond with your partner and your children.quote

6. DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN HOME AND WORK

One of the greatest lessons life has taught me is to say NO to things that don’t align with my priorities. Believe me, it is the biggest mantra to successfully juggle your personal and professional life. Learn to set boundaries. Do not come home with work. While spending time with your kids and partner, don’t be on the phone sending emails or discussing work with coworkers. Be mindful of your personal relationships and start saying no to things that aren’t doing any good to you.

7. CREATE SOME TIME FOR YOURSELF

Making out time to do things you actually love is the secret to maintaining a perfect work-life balance. It is absolutely okay to think about yourself, and to give yourself some “me-time” when necessary. Learn to take care of yourself because only then would you be able to take care of your family and your work.

In conclusion,  maintaining a work-life balance is possible.  It would only demand constant adjustments, a little compromise and some  level of sacrifice. It is better to learn how to make the most of your time and energy. The more you know yourself and your priorities the more balanced your life would be.

THE STRONG WOMAN’S CREED

“I am a strong woman who doesn’t sit around feeling sorry for myself, nor let people mistreat me. I don’t respond to people who dictate to me or try to bring me down. If I fall I will rise up even stronger because I am survivor and not a victim. I am in control of my life and there is nothing I can’t achieve.
I am a strong woman and in essence, I am a gift to this world.”
