Road to Yesterday

Road to Yesterday is a movie written by Genevieve Nnaji and directed by Ishaya Bako.

Sitting in the cinema hall, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect because, I haven’t seen the main female character in a movie for quite some time now and the male character wasn’t exactly a familiar face in Nollywood. But I was determined to see this movie, looking out to be sure that my childhood obsession still had her A game.

Genevieve Nnaji was the main character and played alongside Oris Erhuerho. Other characters in the story were Majid michel who played a very minimal role as Ebere Okaro and then Chioma Omeruah who had to pop up every now and again seeing that her character was Victoria’s friend (the character played by Genevieve).

The movie tells the story of an estranged couple who on their way to attend Izu’s relative’s funeral- (Izu is the character played by Oris Erhuerho), sought to resolve whatever it was that led to the estrangement.  I am not sure how to give you a summary of this movie without actually being a spoiler. But, I can tell you that they were actually in love. Something huge led to the estrangement but Victoria came down to the country, with the intention to seek place. One action changed the course of everything but whether she was able to find peace is something that you will need to watch the movie to find out.

The picture and sound quality was great. Costuming was on point as I noticed that they patronised a lot of Nigerian brands like NACK and Eve and Tribe. The narrative was on point and I point this out because, many a times, I watch certain movies and say to myself, my kids can’t learn grammar from this. Their diction was good and so was the dialogue. Particularly the part were Izu and Victoria kept going back and forth with words trying to establish what one said or what the other meant. At this point, let me mention that the casting was done well. Oris Erhuerho is a fine man and his height was just perfect for Genevieve. they complemented each other so well as was seen in the ‘shower’ scene.

I did see the movie with a colleague, Buchi and she equally loved the movie. Although, she thinks that there was need for some background sound track. However, I think the whole idea of the movie was to allow us to pay more attention to the communication and keep us spell bound to the characters as opposed to those heinous sound tracks we hear in some movies like they are trying to call your attention to every happening in every scene. With this, they didn’t need a sound track to catch my attention.

Overall, it didn’t end like your typical Nollywood story. It was quite realistic as many others but told in a very different way. I recommend that you go watch it when it hits the cinemas later this month. Stay tuned to all of our social media pages for updates. our handle remains, SoTectonic.
