What is love? I thought hard and deep when Nkem Onwudiwe, the founder of Her Network, reached out to me, asking to lend my words to the Love Is campaign. How do I define this feeling? I know what it is but giving words to that feeling seemed pretty difficult. I tried so hard to express myself and then it dawned on me, there is no one definition of love. Even the word of God in 1 Corithians 13:4-7 has 14 definitions of love. How much more we who are mere mortal that can barely comprehend the mystery behind a feeling so deep.
With the Love Is campaign, 43 women have tried to give the best possible definition of love. I looked through the page and found some very interesting ones. Since today is the 14th of February, I decided to go with my best 14:
We all have a choice as to who we love and when we love. It should be a habit but it is ot forced on anyone.
It is only when you have love in you that you can contribute to the success of another.
Love is the foundation of loyalty thus, when you love your friend, you can see the fire.
If you think that being related by blood is what family is about, then you got I wrong. Love is what makes family.
You can be that someone who gives it a meaning by loving yourself. Don’t be desperate to seek someone else. Give love a meaning.
Being selfless yet not worn out.
Truly, without love, we lack empathy for humanity.
It is love that keeps you going.
Just like happiness, love comes from the creator and without him, you cannot say you have love. It is He that gives grace to love.
I love this definition. It may seem selfish but no, it is not! You can’t say you love when you do not care for the person you are. You do not take care of your body, health, spirit….. you have got to care for you!
Another favourite which ties deep into the campaign we had earlier in the year as we sought to seek the Love Lady- self love.
Derin’s definition is very apt for couples which is why I love it.
Short but deep and all encompassing.
The 14th definition belongs to me….. of course, I love my definition, I gave it so I should love it *lol*. Truly, this definition says to me, love is God, love is appreciation and gratitude, love is giving of what you have.
What is love to you?
